Path of Exile 2 Toolkit - Calculation Feature

A two-day sprint designing a DPS calculator dashboard for Path of Exile 2 players — weapon stats in, build decisions out.

The DPS calculator in both states: empty on load, and fully expanded after pasting an in-game item — parsed stats on the left, the color-coded damage breakdown on the right.

Path of Exile 2 players optimize builds with spreadsheets and mental math, comparing weapons across base damage, attack speed, critical strike chance, and layered modifiers. Working with developer Raymond C. in early 2025, I designed a dashboard toolkit that does that computation for them — starting with a damage-per-second calculator built to become a broader community resource.

The problem

The gap wasn’t a lack of tools — the Path of Exile community builds plenty — it was trust and speed. Players needed damage math they could rely on mid-session, presented in an interface that respects the game’s dark, dense visual language instead of fighting it. Two days of runway meant every design decision had to be right the first time.

What I did

The toolkit exists because the community’s calculators were built by engineers for engineers — powerful, but cluttered, hard to read mid-session, and indifferent to the game’s own visual language. I compressed the research into what players had already written: tool reviews, forum threads, and usage patterns that showed exactly where the existing options lose people.

The headline interaction removes the typing entirely. Copy an item in-game, paste it into the calculator, and the raw item text parses into a full damage profile — total DPS up top, then a breakdown where every damage type owns its own color, physical through chaos, so a weapon’s character reads at a glance. A manual entry form sits alongside it for theorycrafting numbers that don’t exist on an item yet.

The interface holds to a tight documented system — Montserrat on a strict size scale, an 8px radius, a 12-column grid, and a dark palette that defers to the game it lives beside. Raymond built it in React from that style guide, and the calculator now runs live as the toolkit’s foundation.

What changed

The calculator shipped as the toolkit’s foundation, with a roadmap already shaped by the same community research: an item value assessor next, then consolidation of the ecosystem’s scattered utilities into one reliable, all-in-one resource for Path of Exile 2 players.
