The process began with a deep dive into understanding the needs of the rapidly growing freelance economy, which had surpassed 50 million Americans but continued to struggle with fragmented financial tools and limited support. When I joined the founder and CEO at RoamHR, the goal was to create an all-in-one financial platform tailored specifically for freelancers—a solution capable of managing banking, invoicing, mileage tracking, and tax obligations with exceptional security and compliance. We started with extensive user interviews across more than 15 freelancers in various industries, uncovering a shared set of challenges: no automated tax withholding, a lack of freelancer-focused financial education, and the exhausting need to juggle multiple tools to run their business. Using these insights, I moved into competitor research and early wireframes to establish structure, followed by high-fidelity designs that highlighted clarity, trust, and user engagement. Through rounds of usability testing and iterative refinement during development, we ensured the platform delivered a smooth, intuitive experience. The final product consolidated essential freelancer tools into one ecosystem, empowering users through financial literacy, automated tax savings, and streamlined workflows. As the platform grew from 14 to more than 650 active users and secured multiple strategic financial partnerships, RoamHR ultimately achieved a successful acquisition—proving strong product-market fit and validating the impact of a truly freelancer-centered solution. This experience reinforced the power of simplifying complex systems and taught me the importance of adaptability in a lean startup environment, where the ability to pivot, innovate, and support users meaningfully is key to both product success and professional growth.
